Don’t Wait For January 1st To Start

We are right in the season when most individuals go into “hibernation mode” and put their health & fitness routines on pause until the new year.  Keeping your immune system strong during the winter months should be a top priority for your body.  If maintaining or improving your health is important to you then you must realize that there is no such thing as a winter break for our bodies.  Consistent activity year round is vital for your mental and physical health.

If You Don't Use It, You'll Lose It

Sitting on the couch will not maintain the fitness levels you created earlier in the year.  Muscle loss starts within 3-4 weeks of inactivity, depending on the individual, and cardiovascular fitness will drop within the first week.

3 Common Barriers During Winter Months

  1. Change in season with colder weather and less sunlight causes us to stay inside more.
  2. External obligations such as travel, parties, and social gatherings for the holiday season pulls in multiple directions, challenging our routines and habits.
  3. The dream that once January 1st comes we will magically gain the new skills and mindset required to accomplish our goals without having a set plan in place. 

These barriers present challenges for us when it comes to the decision we make with our health & fitness routines.  Could you buy warmer gear for walking/hiking in the winter?  Would planning your workouts and routines around travel and social gatherings help?  The choices are ours to make, either you take action and work on your health, fitness, and immune system or you don’t.

The longer you wait, the more challenging it will become.  Our mental and physical health will align with our actions.  If we are inactive and eat low nutritional value food, our body will respond in a certain way, and if we are active and eat high nutritional value food, our body will respond in a certain way!  Challenge yourself to start today with wherever you are and use the resources that you have available to you.  Go for a walk, make a healthy meal, write in your journal, practice meditation, follow a workout routine, join a group, hire a coach, the options are endless!
